The British
Schools Judo
Association first started their Star Award
Scheme in the early 1980's. Since then, much has changed in the sport of
judo and in education. In order to be at the forefront of these changes
the BSJA has now introduced its new Star Award Scheme. This scheme was introduced
for the following reasons:
Children who do not like the
competitive grading process can still be assessed in thier club or school
The award scheme has been re-designed to encourage children to learn and
shows award for thier achievements
It offers schools a "yardstick" to help sports teachers grade and
assess thier pupils for the judo curriculum
There are 5 Star Awards available and on completion of each award a
superb, multicoloured badge and certificate can be obtained. A top quality
poster showing all the techniques required for the 5 Awards is available
to purchase.
There are certificates and different numbered badges available for each
part of the syllabus for which an exam is passed, culminating in the highest
5 Star Award. It should be possible for most children to progress on to
the next Star Award level every 3 months, although some children may take
a little longer, depending on their ability.
There are 3 advanced awards of Bronze, Silver and Gold, for the older pupils
and students. For these awards also there are some excellent badges and
certificates, which can be obtained.
